Fortnite Update 42.40 Is Live Now, and the Clock Is Ticking
Fortnite update 42.40 went live on October 15, and if Epic sticks to the pattern, this is the last major content patch of Chapter 7 Season 4. Servers went down at 4 AM ET for roughly two hours of maintenance, and when they came back up around 6 AM ET, Battle Royale, Reload, and the Horde Rush LTM all had the end-of-season payload: the final two Sprites of the season, fresh Match Overrides, six new Loot Hacks, and the next wave of Fortnitemares 2026 collabs.
With only about two weeks left in the season, 42.40 is your last real chance to collect everything before the island resets. Here is what actually matters in the patch, and what is worth grinding before Season 4 ends.
New Sprites in Fortnite Update 42.40: Honey and Obsession
Epic is done adding Sprites for the season — 42.40 brings the last two, and each does something genuinely useful:
- Honey Sprite: sends a swarm of bees after any enemy who damages you. Think of it as a personal revenge turret you do not have to aim.
- Obsession Sprite: helps you collect other Sprites, which matters a lot if you started the season late and are missing earlier ones.
Both Sprites released with the update and should have their own variants like the earlier ones. The catch: you have until the season ends to collect them, and the variant chase in Fortnite is famously stingy with time. If Sprites are your thing, do not leave them for the final weekend.
Match Overrides and Loot Hacks: What Changed
The early patch notes point to at least three more Match Overrides arriving during Fortnitemares 2026. If you skipped the earlier ones: Override Cartridges hand out either squad-only boosts or lobby-wide effects, and they have quietly become one of the more fun wrinkles in seasonal play. Epic has not named the new ones yet, so expect them to surface through the week.
Loot-wise, update 42.40 adds six new Loot Hacks, continuing the Fortnitemares theme from 42.30. New weapons are not confirmed — with two weeks left in the season, Epic may just be letting the current pool ride. That is not a complaint; the Fortnitemares loot pool is already stacked, and a final week without new toys keeps the meta stable for anyone pushing rank before the reset.
One thing to keep an eye on: the storm above the Geno's Machine landmark keeps growing in intensity. The patch notes do not tie it to 42.40, but it looks like it is opening a portal to another dimension — classic end-of-chapter teasing.
Fortnitemares 2026 Collabs Keep Coming
Fortnitemares collabs are the headline for most players, and 42.40 keeps the conveyor belt moving. The Obsession collab arrived with the update on October 15, and the following are listed for this patch window:
- Beetlejuice
- Hazbin Hotel
- Predator Badlands
- Slender Man
- The Purge
Exact dates for the rest are unknown — Epic tends to reveal them toward the end of the week. Predator Badlands as a tie-in with the film makes obvious sense, and a Hazbin Hotel collab is the kind of left-field swing Fortnite lives for. If you want the skins, keep an eye on the item shop rotation; collab cosmetics tied to a two-week season window do not always come back quickly.
Downtime Details and When Chapter 7 Ends
For the record: update 42.40's downtime started at 4 AM ET on October 15 and lasted about two hours, covering Battle Royale, Reload, and Horde Rush LTM. Standard stuff.
The bigger question is what comes after Season 4. Epic has been tight-lipped, but a two-week runway plus a growing interdimensional storm over Geno's Machine is about as clear a signal as Fortnite ever gives. Whatever Chapter 8 (or the next big story beat) looks like, expect a live event in early November — and expect the queue times to be miserable in a good way.
It is also worth noting Epic's broader direction this month: the company just told its staff to stop hand-writing code and go all-in on AI tooling, which we covered in Epic Games' AI pivot. Love it or hate it, the company shipping Fortnite is changing fast — and patches like 42.40 are the last ones built the old way.
In the meantime, the live-service wars are heating up elsewhere too: Battlefield 6 just landed on Game Pass with its Season 5 update. October is not a slow month for anyone's backlog.
